In 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity, and fraternity as the world’s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. Knights of Columbus are Catholic men, 18 years of age and older, who are committed to making their community a better place, foremost by supporting their local church and growing in their own faith.
For more than a century, Knights of Columbus have followed the formula of faith put forth by Father Michael McGivney. Today, with a model called Faith in Action, nearly 2 million Knights throughout the world live out the Order’s principles of charity, unity and fraternity with programs such as Food for Families, Coats for Kids, Ultrasound Initiative, Special Olympics, Vocations Support, Global Wheelchair Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Consecration to the Holy Family, and days of spiritual reflection.
The Knights of Columbus offer various service opportunities for men in the parish, not limited to but including: Mother’s Day Brunch, Monthly Community Pasta Nights, Oktoberfest celebrations, Lenten Fish Fries, the Annual Parish Picnic, the Annual Golf Outing, college bound scholarships, Veterans appreciation Mass and reception, Mass registration and reception during the duration of the COVID pandemic, and the Keep Christ in Christmas Poster contest.
Charity
The greatest of all virtues is charity or love, writes St. Paul. But the modern mind has distorted these words; charity is more than giving to the needy, and love is more than romance. What these words really mean is this — to will the good of the other person for his or her own sake, even if that means suffering for me. This is the charity, the love, that Jesus had for us on the cross, and we are to approach every person with this same love and charity.
Unity
None of us is as good alone as all of us are together. United in the Catholic faith, Knights support one another in times of joy and grief and at every moment in between. They form a network of men and their families dedicated to building their homes as domestic churches of faith and love, and they work in union with priests to support parishes in the mission of faith formation and evangelization.
Fraternity
Networks of Knights provide men with something that is too often lacking in today’s fragmented society — authentic fraternal fellowship lived out in councils, parishes, online, and in common faith and worthy projects. Working together, we know the truth of the biblical statement: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Prov 27:17). Early in the Order’s history, Knights were told to exemplify “the Golden Rule, which is the essence of Fraternity.” If you are interested in becoming a member, please visit www.kofc.org/secure/en/join/join-the-knights.htmlfor an application form or contact Joe Simons, Membership Director at 203-482-6359
