Christ in the House of Martha and Mary, by Johannes Vermeer, c. 1655.
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.’”[1]
St. Martha is best known for the famous scene in Bethany when she was busy about serving the Lord, while her sister Mary sat at His feet listening to Him speak. Martha is however also the one who when asked the question of faith at the death of her brother, Lazarus, responds with the conviction that Christ is the Son of God and in so doing places all her hope in His service.
The St. Martha Ministry is a group of dedicated individuals who assist in serving the Lord through the diligent care of the linens, altar cloths, vestments, vessels, and various items dedicated to the service of the altar. As Martha served the Lord in her house of Bethany, these individuals offer their careful service in their house of St. Edward to the Lord who is the true head of our household of faith.
